Think this thread you're following right now, about the place of the 'human' when it comes to our spiralling collective additions to tech in all its forms, is really the key question right now. We should do something about it at Kendal this year, maybe a panel or a live interview or something.
I do sometimes think if it's the no.1 thread we should all be following... because there's an argument to be made that we can't solve the climate crisis until we solve this problem. Would love to do something at Kendal if we can manage it!
100% Totally clarifies the point of being ‘out there’. Personally, I don’t go anywhere with out one and notepad and I adore maps. Probably forgotten how to,use a map and compass now, but I find the, so absorbing - a journey in themselves!
A wonderful article, that really resonates with me. I am desperate to use a paper journal for writing notes and thoughts but struggle to get going. The idea of a more tactile experience is so compelling but for some reason I can’t pull myself away from the ease and convenience of my phone/computer etc. I will try to make a more concerted effort moving forward after reading this for sure.
Performing an Instagram-able life extends beyond outdoor activities.
I was chatting this week to a waitress in a west coast bar-restaurant who is living in a motorhome (as is the chef because there is no affordable local rural accommodation).
In the winter she goes travelling, but says the #Vanlife influencers she meets pay fleeting visits to places and are unsociable. Unlike the ‘oldies’ who are touring for the experience.

Great idea.

Good way of putting it!

Thanks Giles, and I do think it's a good time to experiment with more tactile ways of experiencing what we're doing!
I think I would always write on paper rather than type if my handwriting was as beautiful as yours!
This was discussed elsewhere recently in something I was reading - https://www.sciencenorway.no/education-keyboard-skills-psychology/writing-by-hand-activates-more-areas-of-the-brain-than-typing-on-a-keyboard/2320808 - writing involves more of the self than typing.
excellent and totally right. Toss your phone or leave it in your pack.
I only bring mine along for emergencies, just the minimum use of that bloody phone.

I get you. I’m going to quote you in a Post of my own, if that’s OK.
